At the Global Art Awards 2018, held at FIVE Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, Rima Chahine was nominated in three categories, Abstract Art, Newcomer and Painting, for her gestural, richly coloured paintings.

On 21 November 2018 the Global Art Awards were presented at a gala evening at FIVE Palm Jumeirah, Dubai. Rima Chahine had been nominated that summer in three categories: Abstract Art, Newcomer and Painting.
A fearless, gestural approach
The nominations recognised what runs through all her work: bold, spontaneous brushstrokes that capture her state of mind at the moment of painting, layered acrylics in the seasonal, autumn palette of Montreal, and colour used to carry feeling rather than to describe things.
For Rima, painting is a way of saying what words cannot, and of reaching people through emotion. She believes art can cross the barriers of language and culture, and build bridges between people.
The paintings of 2018
It was a remarkably productive year: 24 of the 27 paintings in her collection today date from 2018. Among the largest are Multiverse, about parallel worlds in swirling warm and cool colour; Night Charmer, a nocturne in dark blues and black; Merge, where yellows, blues and oranges run into one another; and Vertigo, 122 cm square, whose blues, blacks and greys pull the eye off balance.
On her own terms
Rima came to painting on her own terms. She is largely self-taught, and she has always followed her own path rather than rules or conventions, which is a large part of what gives her canvases their directness.
